Sowing
Transplant (recommended): Light dependent germinator, sow in very early spring indoors or in a heated greenhouse. Tamp seeds onto the surface of soil and mist evenly. Seedlings can be prone to “dampening off,” therefore, bottom watering is the best method while they grow. For best germination results, use a heat mat under the tray. When transplanting, pluck individual seedlings from their original tray and group them into pairs or triplets. Ashwagandha does not do well under crowded conditions.
Direct seed: Not recommended
Soil Requirements
Prefers full sun, fast-draining, alkaline (pH 7.5 to 8.0) soil and dry-ish conditions. Sweeten regular garden soil with ground limestone.
Light Preference
Full Sun (6 hours of direct light or more)
Plant Spacing
12″
Hardiness Zones
Zones 8 – 12
Harvest
Medicinal: Ashwagndha should be harvested at the end of the growing season, just as the berries finishing growing and before the first hard frost. The majority of beneficial compounds can be found in the roots and should be harvested by hand, cleaned thoroughly, cut into small pieces and then dried. Once the root bit are dried, they can be milled once more for a finer end material.
